BDOS (Black Diamond Open Space) is east of Hwy 169 & Lake Sawyer, south of Henry's Ridge (separated by the railroad tracks) and north of Summit Ridge. BDOS offers lots of singletrack and variety, but is mostly based around XC. There's a few freeride and downhill trails here and in the nearby Summit Ridge & Henry's Ridge, but by NW Washington standards, BDOS is pretty flat. The only two downhill trails are Fresh Squeezed (a slightly easier intermediate downhill trail) and Crooshal (the slightly more difficult, and more fun intermediate downhill trail). Fresh Squeezed is a loop with a singletrack climb while to access Crooshal you either use the Fresh Squeezed climb and a Connector, or the Powerline Road climb. There's also lots of XC options at BDOS (covered more in the Navigation tab).

How to Find It

The main parking area is located directly off of Highway 169. Heading south on 169, first you'll pass the final Maple Valley shopping center (there's a few). It's the flat one that doesn't have a highway interchange or anything. The road will head a bit more into the forest afterwards. After passing under the powerlines there'll be a road to your right. If you want to go to Lake Sawyer, a small secondary parking area is on that road, but there's no point. Keep going and you'll see the Lake Sawyer parking area on your right. About 200 ft later the BDOS parking area will be on your left. If it's full there are various other options, such as the Lake Sawyer parking area, the Summit Ridge parking area, and the parking area at the top of the Powerline Road (see trailforks).

Typical Conditions

Most of the trails have good drainage, and are fine to bike during wet conditions.

Turn by Turn

Out of the parking lot there are two trails. There's also an outdated map booth and two outhouses. The first trail is a signed beginner loop to the left, called Rock and Roll. It's a great novice trail for first timers and lets out like 20 ft from the parking lot. It also accesses Remaster, which accesses many of the trails on the West side of BDOS, and eventually continues across the train tracks to Henry's Ridge. The other trail out of the parking lot is Route 66, the main trail. A couple 100 feet in, it has a 'T' intersection. Go to the right for Summit Ridge, and go to the left for BDOS. The trail continues for a while, accessing Kathleen, Blind Pig & Little Something Special. Then, it continues into the powerline clearing. Here, it accesses Tarzan, the Powerline Road (secondary climb for the DH trails) and Sasquatch. The trail descends back into the forest and accesses Fresh Squeezed & Spike. Right after Spike, it crosses the train tracks into Henry's Ridge. Here's a quick overview of all the trails I just talked about:

Beginner:

  • Rock & Roll, the easy loop out of the parking lot
  • Remaster & Chilly Bin, mainly used as a singletrack connector trail, is a mix between flowy machine built and old singletrack.
  • Tarzan, the flowiest of the beginner trails
  • Sasquatch, one of the older singletrack loops, great for beginner progression
  • Sasquatch Extension, a way to extend the Sasquatch loop, offers slightly a slightly more difficult beginner experience

Intermediate:

  • Kathleen, singletrack loop off of Route 66 and Tarzan. Flowy-ish.
  • Spooky, more technical singletrack off of Remaster.
  • Master Link, second half of the Remaster connector trail, entirely twisty singletrack
  • Brain Wave, the first half is fun and flowy, and great for beginners trying to get more comfortable with speed, second half is one of the more technical intermediate trails here
  • Brain Bucket, first half is standard singletrack, second half is more technical
  • Fresh Squeezed, DH loop, see above
  • Crooshal, best DH trail, see above
  • Supercharger, mix between XC and a tiny bit of DH & Climbing, accessed off of Crooshal at the top
  • Little Something Special, One Way trail, mix between climbing and descending, ends halfway down Crooshal

Advanced:

Not Much, just Blind Pig (see link below for more). The real Advanced & Expert trails are in Summit Ridge, which is connected by a 100 ft trail near the parking lot.

The trail system is entirely mapped out on Trailforks, it's much more up to date than the maps in the Navigation tab:
